Acronyms are words created from typically the first letters of the words in a phrase. Example: NATO means North Atlantic Treaty Organization. They differ from initialisms in that acronyms are pronounced as they are spelled, e.g. NATO, whereas initialisms are pronounced as their component initials, e.g. FBI.
Acronyms are typically listed in all upper case, unless they are conventionally written with a mixed capitalization.
