Josh Lykins shot himself in the head on January 26th 1999, in Show Low, Arizona, three years after leaving The Family International. He was 18 when he left the cult.
Josh left two handwritten notes, one addressed to his young sons and one to his siblings.
As a young teenager, Josh attended Victor Programs in The Family International. His brother Chris noted that "Josh was part of a detention and retraining program involving sleep deprivation, food deprivation, manual labor, silence restriction and isolation."
