Religious "persecution" has historically been used to explain away any criticism of The Family International, ranging from attempts by law enforcement to determine the extent of abuse within the cult to mere criticism of its leaders.
The Family's persecution complex has influenced their everyday practices and life since their earliest years, but heightened criticism by second generation ex-members during the early 2000s caused The Family to largely shift the blame for perceived persecution from supposed jealous churches, Antichrist forces, and the anti-cult movement to a new culprit: "bitter vitriolic apostates".
