In 1978, David Berg enacted the RNR by firing all leaders of the "chain", supposedly to release his followers from their tyranny of dictatorial methods. Disciples were instructed to tell the public and even close family that the group had disbanded, and were advised to return home from the "mission field" (anywhere but the U.S. or home country). Some members took up jobs or pursued other interests for awhile.
