First Generation Adult is a term used to describe members of The Family who joined of their own volition and were not born into the cult. This distinction is often forwarded by second generation ex-members to denote the difference between having been born into the group and having chosen to join the group. A logomachy of sorts exists among ex-members of The Family as to whether it is appropriate to use the term "ex-member" for anything other than first-generation ex-members in order to amplify this distinction.
Animosity between the first generation and subsequent generations is significant, expecially among the ex-member community.
