Glossolalia is nonmeaningful speech comprised of repetitive syllables and phonemes and is used in some religious trances and certain schizophrenic syndromes. The religious glossolalia practiced in The Family is based on the Pentecostal brand of "speaking in tongues".
Note: Some scholars have argued that since the Bible uses the word "tongues" to also mean "languages", the original meaning of speak in "tongues" was to speak the languages of the various Christian communities.
