Religious "persecution" was historically used to explain away any criticism of the cult, ranging from attempts by law enforcement to determine the extent of abuse within The Family International to mere criticism of its leaders.

The Family's persecution complex continues to influence everyday practices and life today, but in recent years heighened criticism by second generation ex-members has caused The Family to largely shift the blame for perceived persecution from supposed jealous churches, Antichrist forces and the anti-cult movement to a new culprit: "bitter vitriolic apostates".
