Background
Candy Ann Pickus left the Children of God in 1978. In 1980, she filed for divorce from Brian Pickus and was granted custody of all her children. According to police reports, filings in civil and criminal cases and related newspaper articles, it is alleged that on September 1, 1980, Brian Edward Pickus, four hired goons and an undertermined number of members of the Family entered her home, beat her and took her two older children. Pickus fled with the kidnapped boys to Chile, Argentina and possibly Spain. A few weeks after the kidnapping, Candy Ann Pickus and Richard Peyer filed a civil suit against the Family of Love, Brian Pickus and John M. Day. The outcome of the case cannot be determined without additional information including a review of the actual filings. Although it was apparently dismissed in January 1984, the case history indicates that the case was not terminated until June 1991 and that motions were filed after January 1984. In 1982, Candy Ann Pickus also filed a civil suit against Phyllis Gotwalt (Brian Pickus's mother, who allegedly was somehow involved with the abduction of her grandchildren and the procurement of forged passports) and several others.
