Initialisms are words created from typically the first letters of the words in a phrase. Example: FBI means Federal Bureau of Investigation. They differ from acronyms in that acronyms are pronounced as they are spelled, e.g. NATO, whereas initialisms are pronounced as their component initials, e.g. FBI.
Initialisms are typically listed in all upper case, unless they are conventionally written with a mixed capitalization.
